5 Reasons to Get a Rock Climbing Gym Membership

Staff

Updated: Jan 21

A rock climbing gym membership offers more options than your typical weight lifting and cardio center. You can push your body and mind to solve complex problems and find a new and engaging workout that is, dare it be said, fun!

When did you last work out and have a good time? Sure, hitting new PBs or getting a dopamine rush from lifting weights is great, but how about trying something new and thoughtful that encourages creativity and body awareness?

Enter a rock climbing gym, and you'll see what all the fuss is about. If you need more influence than that, check out these five reasons to get a rock climbing gym membership and start reaching new heights!

1. Climbing is a Full Body Workout

Rock climbing is a great workout! Pull, push, press, squeeze, and lift yourself up a wall using more muscles than you may have thought you had. Everything it takes to climb increases the heart rate and is a cardiovascular exercise. The best of both worlds!

Climbing shouldn't be your only form of working out, but it's great at building muscle! It's not the most well-rounded form of muscle building, and it is hard to target specific groups. However, most rock climbing gyms include a weightlifting and cardio area, so you can still get your pump on.

2. Rock Climbing in Mental

No, not how the British use the term' mental,' but in the way that it requires a ton of problem-solving and confidence. There's a reason climbers call boulder routes' problems.' It's because they must be solved!

Walk into any rock climbing gym, and you'll find people staring at the wall, mimicking hand motions in the air like they're conducting an invisible orchestra. They're mapping out the beta (the sequence of moves needed to complete a problem successfully) in their head before they hop on the wall.

This problem-solving aspect of climbing fosters creativity and confidence because there is typically more than one way to climb a route. A climber must find what works best for their body. Moreover, when beta is done successfully, a climber's confidence in their route reading and climbing ability increases.

3. Social Hour!

Climbing gyms are a great way to hang out with friends and other climbers. Not every workout will be your best, so sitting and chatting with pals during your downtime or even when you're not inspired to climb that day is nice.

If any climbing is geared more toward social hour, it's bouldering. Bouldering includes climbing short, think 12-15ft high, problems that are typically sustained. This means that a powerful climb requires a more extended rest period. What else are you to do when you're resting but hang out?

4. The Climbing Community

The climbing community is a lively mix-bag of folks who come together to enjoy doing something they love. Climbers come from all walks of life and have diverse backgrounds. From restaurant servers to construction workers to doctors, you'll connect with people you may never have, all because of this silly activity of climbing walls. This diversity is what makes the climbing community so unique and welcoming.

Suppose you're having trouble with a boulder and need advice or want to discuss it. In that case, somebody not too far away is usually psyched to chat about climbing! By joining the climbing community, you join a group of people worldwide with whom you share something.

5. All-Season Activity

Rock climbing doesn't only happen outside anymore. The surge of climbing gyms has created a space for climbers when the weather is terrible, in the off-season, or even late into the night. When it's too hot to enjoy climbing on sun-baked rocks, hit the climbing gym. Too cold and not into snow sports? Hit the climbing gym!

Some gyms have even started allowing 24-hour access so you can climb whenever the itch strikes! Many climbing gyms open early and close late; while a 2 a.m. session may not be in the cards, you likely have plenty of time to spend climbing.

● Bonus Reason to Get a Rock Climbing Gym Membership

It's fun! Push and learn about yourself in a safety-oriented environment. Climbing gyms have safety measures such as crash pads and trained staff to ensure your safety. Conquer those color-filled walls and enjoy time at the climbing gym with your friends. Before you know it, you'll be a regular gym rat!
